The Wedding Photographer Checklist – What You Should Ask

The key to hiring a great photographer for your Calgary wedding is simple; interview them before you sign any contract.

As a client, you have the right to question your potential photographer about any ideas or concerns you may have. And a professional would only be too happy to answer those questions for you.

Here, we offer a list to help you make the right decision for your wedding day!

List of Important Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

What Style will I Be Getting?

Many photographers blend different styles of photography to get the final unique product. For example, at Winter Lotus Photography, we offer more of an illustrative style of photography. We often times use either soft, natural light or dramatic, creative lighting to get the images we want. If you want to learn more about the style, it’s important that you ask for it. Go with the photographer whose style you like best.

Will There be Any Retouching done or Will I Get Untouched Proofs?

Some photographers do prefer to send the polished images back to their clients while others only retouch those images that clients choose. Each photographer has a different choice so you may need to ask beforehand. This is also something that’s listed in the package details so you can use that as your guidance.

How Many Weddings have you Worked on? Which Part of the day is your Favorite?

We’ve been working in the field since 2013 so you can be satisfied that we’ve worked on a lot of weddings. Usually, a photographer’s favorite time is the golden hour, that time of the afternoon when the sunlight is soft and just right for a romantic wedding photo-shoot.

However, since there are two of us here at Winter Lotus, we each have our own special time of day that works perfectly for our style of photography.

Do You Shoot in Black and White or Color? Can I Get Some Photographs in Black and White if I Make a Special Request?

These days, you can’t really stick to just black and white or just color. If our clients request black and white images, we’ll be more than happy to take some, but you’ll have to trust us on when we take those images.

Ask your photographer about the balance (what percent of photos would be black-and-white) so you can get a better sense about what you’re getting.

Will I Get the Actual Photographer or an Associate?

This is an important question. In many cases if the photography company is booked solid, they may send an associate to cover your wedding, but this doesn’t mean that the associate’s work would be subpar. Hash out the details before the day and make an informed decision.

In the case of Winter Lotus Photography, you’ll get both of us for your wedding.

Should I Provide a Shot List?

Sure! Most photographers like to have a shot list so they don’t miss out on anything specific. But be aware that we don’t need a grocery list of particular shots.

If you hire a pro, don’t worry about them forgetting about certain shots. They’ve been doing this for a long time, they know what to do.

Booking a Professional Wedding Photographer

When looking for questions to ask wedding photographer before hiring, it’s important that you make the right choice by judging the photographer’s reputation and reviews through their testimonials. This will make your search easier.
