A Mother’s Guide to Preparing for Your First Maternity Photoshoot

These months are an overwhelmingly happy and emotional time for you. You and your partner are expecting a little bundle of joy and you’re going through a myriad of feelings.

And so, you’ve decided to commemorate these months with a special maternity photoshoot, so you can have some precious images that would remind you of your love for your little tot before their birth.

But where should you start?

As Calgary maternity photography, we bring to you a how-to guide that should help you prepare.

Details You Should Know about Your Maternity Photoshoot

What to Expect

A maternity photo session can be a solo affair, with a partner, or with other family members. This photo session is completely focused on your love and passion for your baby.

The Right Time

31-36 weeks from when your pregnancy began – that is the best time for a maternity photoshoot. At this time, your body doesn’t feel as uncomfortable anymore, and you don’t have as much bloating either. Your belly will also have a lovely round and full shape, which is exactly what a photographer needs.

Your Basic Wardrobe

Ladies, never hide that belly!

The basic rule for maternity wear is to select something comfortable. Also, something that shows off your bump!

Think stretchy fabrics like spandex that contours your body shape. If you’re comfortable with uncovering your belly, wear a front-open lightweight top like a negligee so achieve that seemingly ethereal look.

Makeup Choices and Accessories

Always go for the light and natural look. Heavy makeup can appear dark on camera so it’s best to stick to light foundation to even your skin tone. Also, get your hair fixed at a salon (you deserve it!) and get a simpler updo.

This way, you won’t have to be distracted by any stray hair on your face or shoulders. As for accessories, try a minimal approach. Remember; the focal point of your photos should be you and your belly, not your large earrings.

A Choice of Partner

Your partner is the best person to have alongside. Aside from giving you the vote of comfort and confidence, having your partner there will allow the photographer to try some couples’ shots as well.

If you want to bring your children as well, have them wear solid colored simple clothing, free of logos.

Location

The best location is the natural outdoors, though you can choose some more intimate locations if you’re shy.

Locations such as parks, natural reserves and urban spots are the best choices. In fact, we just had a photo session with a client at the beautiful Lake Louise which provided us with some exquisite photos.

With the right outdoor location, you can have plenty of light and a well-maintained landscape as your background, and that’s not something one can replicate in an indoor studio.
